Never settle for a mundane photograph. Sometimes you are gonna have to fight for it. I didn’t want a boring photo of Madonna in a press room back in 1982. I wanted something that was alive!

My favorite Madonna photo when she made her first trip to L.A. back in 1982. I wanted a real raw photo, not the usual press room junk like everyone else was getting. I just stood on the sidelines, waited for the right moment and screamed out her name. MADONNA! The rest is history, as you can see.

In 1982 Madonna made her first visit to Los Angeles at The American Music Awards. This was a big deal and I was shooting for the Dick Clark, the shows producer. This permitted to stand anywhere I wanted. I could have stood in the front room and got the standard mugging for the camera photo with the corporate background in the photograph, but that is not what I was after. I wanted something cool and special.
