In 1980 I opened my first photo agency, California Features International at the corner of Beverly Blvd and Martel. I had a studio downstairs, a full on darkroom with a massive machine to cranking out hundreds of black and white prints. This was my upstairs loft office where I had this map on the wall with little red pins in each country where I was selling photos! I loved this space and the business. I would live here for days on end taking photos and working around the clock. Nothing could keep me away from the business.
My original “dream girl” Teri Peterson in my kitchen, 1980.
There would be no teenage photographer Brad Elterman if it was not for Kim Fowley. That is a fact. He gave me access to all of his wonderful and so colorful bands. Kim believed in his talent and in me to document everything back then in 1977. I would fly off to Tokyo or Amsterdam to hock my photos and to establish connections with all of the magazines a month later The Runaways or The Orchids would have a double page in Music Life in Japan. It’s a different world today. All of those cool magazines are gone, but Kim remains, still to this day an exciting, lovable and photogenic figure in pop culture today. I took this shot of him a couple of weeks ago at his Hollywood pad. Chelsea Schuchman was there too and you can see all of the photos on Factory 77. Enjoy your Sunday.
My friend photographer Darren Ankenman after a dinner last week in town.
One day in 1980 there was a knock at my door and it was a smiling Matt Dillon ready to have his photo taken. I converted my living room to a photo studio where I did a series of photos for Super Teen magazine. Matt brought a bunch of t shirts and and I put on some 70’s music. Matt began to sort of dance and I took photos. I never saw him again.
The original “Dream Girl”, Chelsea Schuchman photographed as she departed Reel Inn in Malibu earlier this week. Chelsea has these two large fish tacos and a Dr. Pepper for lunch. I will never forget this amazing afternoon watching Chelsea consume her fish tacos.
Inside Franz’s Tavern at the tip of Manhattan Island with my dear friend, photographer Sandy Kim. I had just concluded my tour of “the center of the earth” with Sandy and we walked down Stone Street for some Bangers and Mash at the iconic tavern.
