During my glory teenage years of photographing pop culture I had real icons to work with. Real icons like Joan Jett, The Runaways, Dylan, David Bowie and tons of others. Today there are no icons. We have packages like Kim Kardashian and The Jersey Shores. Really sad for our American youth.
The Ramones were so much fun to photograph. They had all the poses down and it was so natural for them. I think that their brilliant manager Danny Fields, also a photographer, trained them well. I took this photo backstage at a Whiskey A Go Go concert in 1977. In a thousand years historians will be able to pinpoint the exact time and place that this photograph was taken by studying the graffiti on the Whiskey’s wall!
Joan Jett is not telling me to fuck off in this classic photograph I took backstage at The Whiskey A Go Go. We were good pals even though I have not seen her in almost 30 years. I just hope that I get an invite to drop by the set of the new Runaways film.
