My favorite Cherie Curie photograph. She invited me into her teenage bedroom, took a drag of her cigarette and I started taking photos. That was 1977.
I ran into model Ana Coto in the bathroom of the old Sugar Shack on Magnolia Blvd in Sherman Oaks recently. It was in this very same restroom where Cherie Curie, Joan Jett, Kim Fowley, me and half of the valley teeny poppers would sing, dance and pee!
Thank you HUH!
One evening in 1976, I drove to the Sugar Shack with my pal Rodney Bingenheimer where we met up with Kim Fowley. It was on that evening when Kim met Cherie Currie and The Runaways was born. Last night, after thirty years, I returned to The Shack with actress Ana Coto and I showed her where all of us danced to Bowie and made out in the parking lot under the stars. No one can take those memories from me.
Thank you Oyster Magazine for the cool four page layout of my photos and interview in your new issue! Love it!
A rare and exclusive glimpse into the bedroom of record producer Kim Fowley late this afternoon. Check out his latest international recording artist, Brianna Garcia. I can’t tell you how much my photo session today reminded me of photographing The Runaways at Kim’s pad back in 1977! I kept thinking that Joan Jett would walk in the door at any moment!
I remember one warm afternoon in the summer of 77 I left the Sunset Strip for the San Fernando Valley to take some photos of Cherie Curie of The Runaways for their Japanese record company, Nippon Phonogram. The instant that the Japanese got a whiff that Cherie had a twin, they dispatched me right over to their pad to take MORE photos!
