The cover of my Japanese Runaways book published in 1976 by Shinko Music Publishing Company. I shot the cover photo at some car museum on Hollywood Blvd. Wild!
Another Marie and Cherie photo of mine in Music Life. Can anyone translate?
My best client in the world was Music Life magazine in Japan. They would buy all of my photos, especially anything of The Runaways. The Japanese editors would call my parents house all the time, all day and night and ask for more Runaways photos! It seemed like it would never stop, but it did.
During my Sloppy Jane photo session last week, it kept reminding me of my early years taking photos of Joan, Cherie and The Runaways. It goes without saying that SJ are giant Runaways fans.
Another never before published photograph of Cherie Currie at home during the summer of ‘77. Happy holidays!
During the summer of ‘77 we all hung out at the Sugar Shack in Sherman Oaks. You had to be under 21 to get enter and it was the coolest kids in town including Joan Jett and Cherie Currie of The Runaways. The music was amazing and there was all sorts of unprotected teenage sex going on in the parking lot ( DO NOT TRY THAT TODAY ). This evening I returned after three decades to The Shack with actress Ana Coto and made this photo.
Pop culture writer Evelyn McDonnell interviewed me yesterday for her upcoming Runaways book. We looked at old photos, like this rare photo of Cherie at home as we spoke about those magical days. I did my best to explain to to Evelyn about the personalities of each band member. Joan stood out from the pack. She had that essence of coolness that is not easy to put into words. Read about our day on Evelyn’s blog.
