I started when I was about 16 years old. Yes, most importantly is to never comprehend the work “no”. So many people told me that I would never be able to sell my photos. Find a local mentor. Stay in school.
Any camera is good. It is all about the creative process not the camera. For digital I love my pocket Canon S95 point and shoot. So many young photographer today are shooting with film and I love the Contax G2, but a cheapo Canon AE1 on EBAY will do the trick just as well. Best of luck and remember that part of the process is to have fun!
Find a niche in photography. Be good at it. Do not be afraid to be a self promoter. Go out every night a hand out dozens of business cards. A blog is a must.
